Armstrong to address issues within education system facing deaf pupils

September 12, 2018 10:49 AM

Kellie ArmstrongThe Alliance Party's Kellie Armstrong has called for hard of hearing and deaf pupils and students to come forward and talk about their experiences of Northern Ireland's education system.

Kellie - who is hard of hearing herself - has secured a meeting with education officials aimed at discussing provisions for children who are hard of hearing or deaf and she's looking for those with first-hand experience to come forward prior to this meetings.

She added: "I do not want to presume to know what school was or is like for anyone with a hearing impairment or who is deaf. I want to learn from people who attend/attended school in Northern Ireland to find out how we can improve the system to ensure all children have equality of opportunity.

"If you want to be involved, share your experiences by emailing me a few lines outlining: what was good or not so good about your school days and if you have any suggestions for improvement.

My meeting with education officials is at the end of September. If you could forward any comments or evidence by Saturday, September 22, I will have time to review and bring them to the table."

Kellie's email is kellie.armstrong@mla.niassembly.gov.uk
