Lyttle pledges support for the Letterbox Club

November 9, 2012 9:43 AM

Chris LyttleAlliance MLA Chris Lyttle has pledged his support to the Letterbox Club, an umbrella group aiming to break the cycle of under achievement of children in care.

Working together in Partnership, the Letterbox Club is delivered through Booktrust and the Fostering Network, sending personalised parcels to the homes of children in care on a monthly basis between May and October.

In Northern Ireland the group also provides a number of additional supporting activities for children that take place in local libraries and involve activities such as reading and storytelling.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: "The Letterbox Club is a worthwhile service giving vital support to children in care across Northern Ireland.

"By carefully selecting literature and delivering them to the children's homes the group is inspiring a love of books while helping to improve educational attainment of children in foster care.

"It has often been shown that education works better with parental involvement and I admire the role foster parents take on. The Letterbox Club gives them an added network of support, helping children in care achieve their full potential.

"In my view the Education Minister should be looking at schemes like the Letterbox Club with a view to funding them and making them more mainstream. By doing this many more children could be reached and discover a love of literature."
