Growing our economy and protecting the environment

Economic growth and protecting the environment are often held to be opposites. Some people argue that if you protect the environment, you stifle growth. In Alliance, we reject that view. In Northern Ireland we are perfectly sited for green energy like wind and wave power; we have some of the best engineering talent in the world and two great engineering universities; and we benefit from Ireland's clean, green, image in the rest of the world.

Barack Obama has made the green new deal one of his key policy objectives in the United States. It's time we harnessed the excellent potential a green new deal could bring to Northern Ireland.

Protecting our environment means tackling the big issues like climate change; but it also means protecting our beautiful countryside and the built heritage of our towns and cities. We are lucky to live in a place with some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, and now with some of the most vibrant towns and cities. Alliance believes in protecting that heritage for all to enjoy, not ruining it for some to make a quick profit.
