Alliance Sustainability Spokesperson Alan Lawther has welcomed comments from new Environment Minister Edwin Poots saying he is considering introducing a levy on plastic bags. Alan Lawther said any such move is long overdue and would provide a significant boost for environmental protection.

Cllr Alan Lawther said: " Alliance has long campaigned for the creation of a plastic bag levy and I am glad that Edwin Poots is considering such a measure.

"In the Republic of Ireland , the levy has been used to help fund environmental projects and we could see similar benefits here with introduction of this scheme. Plastic bags that are discarded are an eyesore and if people think twice about throwing them away, then that can only be a good thing.

"The Stormont Executive must think creatively and radically about sustainability and Alliance will hold them to account on this issue."
