Alliance Party MLA Kieran McCarthy has revealed he has received notification from Minister Conor Murphy that Northern Ireland residents aged 60 and over can travel free on the Rathlin Island ferry.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: "I am very pleased that Senior SmartPass holders can travel for free on the Rathlin ferry. This is another piece of great news for older people here.

"If public transport is free for older people then this must apply to every type of transport, including rail, buses and ferries. When I quizzed the Minister on this issue, he was unsure about whether people aged 60 and over were entitled to free travel, so I am very glad to have received this notification from him.

"Rathlin Island is a beautiful place and this news is a real boost now particularly as we are in the summer months, and people will be looking into going on day trips."
