Alliance Sustainability Spokesperson Cllr Alan Lawther has welcomed news of plans to cut rates bills for people whose homes are environmentally-friendly. The plans were announced by Finance Minister Nigel Dodds.

Antrim Councillor Alan Lawther said: "This is very good news for local households.

"Incentives that make people want to go green are very important. Given the current climate of rising fuel and energy bills, incentives to insulate property and use green energy sources are extremely useful. This scheme will hopefully work on two levels. Firstly, more people will install insulation or use renewable energy in their homes - this will protect the environment. Secondly, home insulation and renewable energy will save households money, through both the rates reduction and reduced energy bills.

"Obviously Alliance would like to see reform of the whole rates system in the longer-term; however, this particular initiative must be strongly welcomed."
