Orange Order plan to stop drinking at North Belfast parade welcomed11.24.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 18th Jun 2008
North Belfast Alliance Representative Gerry Lynch has welcomed plans from the Orange Order to provide a marshal to assist police to crack down on drinking at the Tour of the North parade. The parade is taking place in North Belfast on Friday evening, and Gerry Lynch praised efforts of organisers and the community to ensure that the parade passes peacefully. Gerry Lynch, who is also Executive Director of the Alliance Party, said: "I am very heartened by this Orange Order initiative. Any steps which will reduce tensions are very welcome. "Encouraging progress has been made in North Belfast on the issue of parading, and this progress is a tribute to the hard work and positive dialogue between the community and the Orange Order. "Let's hope that this initiative can be a blueprint for the future. It would be great to see this Orange Order scheme implemented across Northern Ireland to prevent drinking at parades. "The signs are extremely positive, and I am very hopeful that we will see a quiet parading season this year." ENDS
