Following the news that Brian Cowen is to become Taoiseach, Alliance leader David Ford MLA has expressed hope that Cowen will be able to maintain positive relations that Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have had under Bertie Ahern's reign.

The Alliance leader said: "I welcome this news and I would like to congratulate Brian Cowen.

"Northern Ireland has always enjoyed positive relations with the Republic of Ireland under Bertie Ahern's premiership and I would be hopeful that Brian Cowen can maintain these very positive circumstances. It is vitally important that politicians both North and South work to strengthen the economies of both areas.

"I look forward to working closely with Brian Cowen in the future."
