Alliance Education Spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has stated that the Caitríona Ruane's approval for the creation of Blackwater integrated school in County Down has got to be a sign of things to come. He said that the Minister should follow up this important decision with further moves on increasing integrated education in Northern Ireland.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: "Caitríona Ruane must continue this important work by taking more steps on integrated education. I strongly welcome the fact that this school has been given the green light by the Minister and hope it is a sign of things to come.

"If the Minister continues good work like this on integrated education she might be able to improve her end-of-term grades after a shaky start.

"Those involved in the Blackwater integrated project made a very strong case for their new school. It will take in the whole Mid/South-Down area and provide parents with the important option of sending their children to an integrated school. Alliance believes that every parent should have this option as of right.

"Politicians from other parties should be more positive about this exciting development and the potential for boosting integrated education across Northern Ireland.

"Segregation costs Northern Ireland £1 billion every year. Creating more schools like Blackwater is essential if we are to reduce duplication and make efficiencies. Why should towns have town segregated school, when one integrated school makes more sense, both socially and financially?"
