Alliance Chief Whip Kieran McCarthy MLA has said that households must not be hit with increased tap tax bills to make up for NI Water's cash shortfall error, He added that if NI Water did not spend so much on bottled water, and used their own supply they might make more efficiencies. His comments come as the Regional Development Committee discusses the issue today.

The Strangford MLA said: "NI Water need to be hauled over the coals for this shortfall error. This is a total disgrace. The public should not be made to pay for NI Water's mistake. There must be no increase in water charges.

"This is the kind of error like this simply cannot be brushed off. We need to know how and why this devastatingly costly mistake was made.

"Maybe if NI Water hadn't spent so much cash buying bottled water, and had used their own instead, they wouldn't be in as much of a pickle!"
