Alliance Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has broadly welcomed the move from the Health Minister to reorganise the health system announced in the Assembly today. He said that he hopes the new arrangements will improve accountability and efficiency.

The Strangford MLA said: "I strongly welcome the decision to not simply have one Health and Social Services Council, but instead to look at the benefits of the current system.

"I welcome the creation of a local commissioning board to deal with resourcing for trusts.

"Efficiencies must be made; however, they must be made in order to bolster frontline services, not downgrade them.

"The Minister has made a commitment to strengthen disease prevention. He must now deliver on this commitment.

"I am also glad to see that there will be democratic local input. I want to see the highest level of accountability to deliver the best possible service, tailored to the specific needs of local people."
