Fitzpatrick calls on Ikea to clean up catalogue mess

Alliance East Londonderry representative Cllr Barney Fitzpatrick has called on Ikea to clean up the mess that their catalogues has caused in the Coleraine area with many lying in the streets as rubbish. The catalogues, which were delivered around Northern Ireland with the opening of their new store in Belfast, are now causing an eyesore around the North Coast area.

The Skerries Councillor said: "These catalogues which are now just no more than rubbish in this area should be cleared up Ikea who caused this mess in the first place.

"The North Coast is a big tourist area but people will not come back if they get a bad impression of the area if there is rubbish just lying in the streets. And I do not think that it should be the local tax payers who should pick the bill up at the end of the day.

"There is also a problem with yellow pages in areas with a lot of holiday homes as there can be a gap of several months between when these yellow pages are left outside homes and the owner returning. These yellow pages can just turn into rubbish if they are left outside houses for more than a couple of days.

"These types of catalogues should be picked up by the company if they are still there after a couple of days to prevent them turning into rubbish and a blight on the area. If catalogues like the yellow pages are left outside houses for weeks at a time then it is also showing burglars which houses are unoccupied.

"So it would be in everybody's best interest if they were picked up."
