Alliance Culture Arts and Leisure Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has blasted the UUP's David McNarry for timewasting and troublemaking in relation to the debate he brought against the use of Irish in the Assembly today.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: "This debate was a total waste of time. It was about nothing more than troublemaking and whipping up tension.

"People were appalled at the nature of this motion. They will also be appalled that their so-called political leaders are discussing such matters when they should be tackling vital issues like improving our health and education services.

"We have classroom assistants out on strike and an Executive that is running scared from making decisions. Today's debate on the Irish language is a terrible reflection on those who back the motion. Its time they got down to some proper work for once."
