Alliance Chief Whip Kieran McCarthy MLA has blasted news that the police want to investigate the USPCA on alleged animal abuse following a counter claim from the owner of a puppy farm in Fermanagh that was raided by the organisation.

The Strangford MLA, Mr McCarthy, said: "The public deserve answers as to why are the police are doing this. This sorry saga is an absolute disgrace.

"The police should be doing all they can to help the USPCA instead of undermining them.

"The USPCA have a proud record of protecting animals since their foundation in 1836. The police are potentially putting the safety of local animals in jeopardy with today's revelations.

"I sincerely hope that this ludicrous episode will not tarnish the excellent reputation of the USPCA. "
