Alliance Sustainability Spokesperson Cllr Alan Lawther has backed a new green energy grants scheme launched today by Minister Nigel Dodds. He did however call on the Minister to ensure that these grants are easy to apply for because applicants for other similar energy schemes have been plagued by red tape.

The Antrim Alliance Party Councillor said: "This new green energy grant scheme is great news. I am glad that action is being taken to encourage more people to power their homes using environmentally-friendly energy sources. A little effort to go green can go a long way if everyone does their bit.

"The Minister must however make sure that this scheme does not become mired in bureaucracy and end up dissuading interested applicants. For example the level of paperwork required regarding planning applications and building control in other similar schemes was massive."
