Alliance Sustainability Spokesperson Cllr Alan Lawther has hailed news that Bombardier and Queens University are to take part in a cutting-edge £95 million environmental research project aimed at reducing aeroplane emissions. He stated that the Executive must follow their lead, be radical and produce legislation and initiatives which will make Northern Ireland a world leader on green issues. The Environmentally Friendly Engine programme which spans over five years, involves 11 organisations across the UK and will examine cutting fuel consumption, emissions and noise from aircraft.

Cllr Alan Lawther said: "Its great news that Bombardier and Queens University are getting involved in this ground breaking environmental project.

"Aircraft use is a major contributor to global warming and any schemes that will reduce this problem is one which must be welcomed.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to urge the Executive to follow Bombardier and Queens University's lead on green issues. The Executive must be more radical and must encourage and assist people to go green.

"They must provide better schemes to get more local people to install alternative energy systems at home, and they should examine initiatives like rain water recycling.

"The Executive have a golden opportunity to make Northern Ireland a world leader on environmental issues - they must make bold decisions and take this opportunity."
