Alliance Leader David Ford has congratulated Gordon Brown on becoming the new Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party.

David Ford said: "I would like to congratulate Gordon Brown on being confirmed as the new Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party.

"There will be major issues in future in relation to the treasury and its funding for Northern Ireland that he will still be involved in.

"Hopefully he will not have to devote as much time to Northern Ireland as his predecessor did, now that devolution has at long last been restored."
