Research findings bolster the case for ending segregation5.39.00pm GMT Thu 1st Feb 2007
North Antrim Alliance Representative Jayne Dunlop has welcomed the findings of Northern Ireland's first Deliberative poll stating that it underlined support for sharing and therefore ending segregation. The study, which was carried out by Queens University, Stanford University and Newcastle University, recorded the opinion of people in Omagh on a number of issues, before and after a discussion session. Jayne Dunlop said: "These survey findings are encouraging as they illustrate the level of support for sharing in Northern Ireland. "Segregation costs Northern Ireland taxpayers one billion pounds every year. If we shared services we could save this cash and invest it back in providing better public transport, health and education services. "So many studies have revealed that there is a high level of support for shared services here. Now, it is up to the government to meet this obvious demand by providing shared services and ending segregation. "Its time for the government to put their money where their mouth is and make real progress in creating a shared future for everyone in Northern Ireland." "A shared future not only makes economic sense but will also help us get rid of tribalism and prejudice in our society." ENDS
