Alliance says its time to bin junk food in schools3.45.00pm GMT Fri 26th Jan 2007
Alliance Party Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy, has backed government moves to ban junk food from school tuck shops, saying that it will help combat the obesity crisis among young people. It was suggest that the government plans to cut the sale of junk food in schools from September. The Strangford MLA said: "I very much support these plans as they will help in stopping obesity among young people. "Children need to learn about having a healthy lifestyle. We must do our best to start children off in the way as regards their diet. "If this strategy can get children eating more fruit at breaktime instead of greasy or sugary junk food then it will have worked well. "There will be those who complain about these plans but the reasoning behind these moves is sound. Anything that can be done to protect the health of children must be put into practice." ENDS
