Alliance Leader David Ford and Naomi Long have extended their sympathies to the family and friends of David Ervine following his passing this afternoon. They paid tribute to David Ervine's personal passion and crucial role in turning loyalism away from violence.

David Ford said: "I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to David Ervine's family and friends at this most difficult of times.

"His personal passion for progress will be missed. He played a pivotal role in turning loyalism away from violence.

"David was someone who clearly demonstrated that somebody who had a past could change and become a positive influence for the future."

East Belfast Alliance Assembly Member, Naomi Long said: "David Ervine's passing is extremely sad and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

"I am shocked and saddened at his death at such a young age.

"David was a very energetic and enthusiastic politician. His voice and contribution in local politics will be very much missed."

Máire Hendron, who is an Alliance Councillor in the Pottinger area, said: "I found him very helpful to work with and he will be missed by many people in East Belfast. My thoughts are with his family at this time."
