Alliance Party Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has today in the Assembly proposed a motion the back the recommendations within the Bamford Report on mental health and called for funding to be provided to create world-class mental health facilities here.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: "I proposed this motion in the Assembly, as it is of paramount importance that Northern Ireland has world-class mental health facilities.

"Its time that the recommendations of the Bamford Review were implemented, as many vulnerable people are put at risk due to inadequate mental health policy in Northern Ireland.

"Public funding must be made available to ensure that the recommendations of the Bamford Review can be followed. We need better local facilities to help our mental health staff deliver the best possible care.

"Recently, we have heard horror stories of young people with anorexia or bulimia who may not be adequately protected here, due to the lack of a coherent mental health strategy in Northern Ireland. The Bamford Review must be implemented and funding provided as a matter of urgency to protect all vulnerable people in our society."
