Alliance Party Spokesperson on older people Kieran McCarthy MLA has expressed his shock and disgust after five pensioners across County Antrim were robbed last night in separate incidents. He stated that everything possible should be done to catch the perpetrators and such crimes must result in tough sentences to act as a strong deterrent.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: "I was shocked and disgusted to hear that five pensioners were robbed in there homes yesterday around County Antrim.

"We hear of attacks on older people on an almost daily basis. It is a tragic blight on our society.

"I appeal to anyone with information on these crimes to contact police immediately. We must catch these thugs and harsh sentences must be handed down by the courts to send out the strongest possible message.

"I call on people to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity around their neighbours' houses

"I would urge communities to look out for older people who are living alone because a stronger sense of community will also act as a deterrent to criminals."
