Alliance Leader slams disgraceful scenes inside and outside the Assembly chamber

Alliance Leader David Ford has expressed his shock and disgust at the attack carried out by Michael Stone at Stormont today. David Ford praised the bravery of the doorkeepers at Parliament Buildings in averting the attack.

David Ford stated: "I am absolutely disgusted by this incident. This act of cowardice illustrates the need for everyone to sign up to the rule of law and move forward in creating a peaceful society.

"What happened outside the chamber is the ugly and violent manifestation of the sectarian hatred which we have experienced for too long.

"I wish to commend the courage shown by our doorkeepers who put their own lives on the line to protect everyone in the building.

"I wish those who were injured in this attack a swift recovery.

"The disgraceful incident at the door followed the farcical proceedings in the chamber. It is clear that both DUP and Sinn Fein have failed to live up to their obligations and the government is conspiring to let them off the hook.

"If we are to learn anything from the attack by Michael Stone, it is a clear indication that it is time for all parties to cut the nonsense and move forward to genuine power-sharing."
