Newtownabbey Alliance Party Councillor, Tom Campbell has demanded an end to racism after allegations emerged that a teenage girl who attends Glengormley High School was the victim of a racially-motivated assault.

Cllr Tom Campbell said: "The message must hit home. Racism is disgraceful and those who commit hate crimes will be punished very severely.

"These allegations have come to light just a week after a pilot scheme was launched in Newtownabbey to combat racism. I welcome this pilot scheme and I hope it will help eradicate this scourge on our society, as it is clear that this problem is on the increase.

"Schools should be given more information to help them combat racism more effectively.

"Racism, like all forms of prejudice must be stamped out. People should be made welcome in Northern Ireland, not made to feel threatened.

"This matter is under investigation by the relevant authorities. If this is found to be a matter of racially-motivated assault, I hope it is vigorously pursued in the courts."
