Alliance Councillor Tom Campbell has expressed shock at a shooting in Newtownabbey Police station.

Cllr Campbell, a member of Newtownabbey DPP, said: " This was a shocking incident. I would express my concern for the police officer who has sustained apparently significant injuries. An investigation will reveal whether or not this incident was foreseeable. On the basis of the available evidence to hand this shooting could not have been anticipated by the authorities and was therefore not realistically preventable. The investigation will look into these issues and it would not be appropriate to second guess the conclusions of a detailed examination of all the relevant circumstances."

Cllr Campbell concluded: "Regrettably personal firearms still continue to be a requirement for the protection of the Police officers generally and also to protect the public interest generally."
