Alliance Party Assembly Health Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy has said it is essential that prescription fraud is tackled as part of the drive to maximise efficiency in the health service.

The Strangford Assembly member stated: "The Alliance Party has been challenging the Government on the waste of £1 billion each year on segregated services, and this is part of an overall drive to maximise efficiency in Government.

"Prescription fraud comes at huge cost to the health service, and people must know that public money used in the service is used efficiently.

"Moves to implement systems to tackle prescription fraud must be judged on whether or not they are successful. But the health service is right to prioritise this issue, and the public must be assured of a successful outcome."
