Alliance Party Justice Spokesperson, Dr Stephen Farry, has slammed police for not carrying out a thorough investigation into the disappearance of IRA murder victim, Jean McConville, until 20 years after she went missing. The Police Ombudsman, Nuala O'Loan today announced that a complaint brought by two of Mrs McConville's children was upheld.

Dr Farry stated: "Ultimately it was the IRA who were responsible for the disappearance and murder of Jean McConville, but it is a disgrace that her disappearance was neglected by the police for over 20 years. Her body should not have been required for any missing person or murder investigation to be carried out.

"The police need to be clear how their policies and practices with respect to how such incidents are recorded and investigated have changed. They should also clarify what is, or has been, the status of investigations into the other cases of the Disappeared."
