Alliance Party Health Spokesperson, Kieran McCarthy, has backed a funding programme which will help provide sports facilities in some of the poorest areas of Northern Ireland, however he has called for the provision of further government to help combat obesity. Over £400,000 from the Big Lottery Fund is being given to 17 projects encouraging physical activity in Northern Ireland.

The Strangford Assembly Member said: "Its great news that over £400,000 will go towards encouraging physical activity in Northern Ireland. However, the government must do more to combat the problem of obesity.

"The £400,000 lottery funding investment will provide a massive boost to local sports projects and will help instil confidence in areas that have been badly affected by the troubles."

Kieran McCarthy concluded: "Alliance does however, wants to see further funding being provided to encourage healthy living among young people in Northern Ireland."
