Alliance Party Health Spokesperson, Kieran McCarthy, has backed David Hanson's announcement that pubs in Northern Ireland will not be allowed to open 24-hours-a-day; however, he is disappointed that the Minister is changing the laws concerning corner shop alcohol licensing.

The Strangford Assembly Member said: "I am very glad that the Minister has decided to shut the door on plans for 24-hour pub opening.

"The announcement also means that publicans will have to submit an application to their council, to be allowed to keep their pub open for the extra hour from one until two in the morning. This will ensure that any plans for extended opening hours will be regulated and limited effectively.

"I am, however, very concerned that David Hanson has decided to reform the law regarding licensing for shops, allowing them to sell alcoholic drinks.

"Alliance is strongly opposed to allowing more shops to sell alcoholic drinks, as enough are allowed to do so already."
