Alliance Vice Chair and Castlereagh Councillor, Michael Long, has called on the government to scrap hospital parking charges for regular hospital patients in Northern Ireland. Cllr Long's comments follow a report from House of Commons Health Select Committee.

Cllr Long stated: "All hospital parking charges for regular patients should be scrapped as they unfairly penalise those requiring long term treatment.

"People that are receiving treatment for cancer, and heart patients, are hit badly by the cost of hospital parking. I would like to see a fairer approach, to ensure that travelling to receive health treatment does not cost these people excessive amounts of money.

"This is an issue that the government must address, because paying these fees on a long-term basis is unfair to patients."
