Antrim Alliance Councillor, Alan Lawther, has demanded that the government's £59 million renewable energy scheme be put in place immediately. Cllr Lawther's appeal comes in the wake of reports that the project will be delayed or even scrapped.

Cllr Lawther stated: "The Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment must implement the renewable energy scheme as a matter of urgency.

"The scheme will provide homeowners with the chance to equip their house with solar, wind, biomass, geothermal or PV energy systems.

"This great opportunity to help protect the environment must not be missed and I call on government get their act together and implement this project.

"The initiative has already been unduly delayed, so the government must act swiftly to get the project up and running.

"We are facing a race against time to protect the environment, therefore the government must implement such schemes now before it is too late."
