Alliance Party Leader David Ford has welcomed Children's Commissioner proposals for safer school transport, and said obligatory seat belts on school buses travelling at over 30mph are essential.

David Ford stated: "The proposals from the Children's Commissioner are in line with Assembly Committee recommendations some years ago.

"The Alliance Party has consistently urged implementation of recommendations concerning seat belts on all school transport. The tragic consequences of not having them have been illustrated several times since, not least in the appalling crash in County Meath two years ago.

"School buses operating on routes exceeding 30mph should have belts placed on them immediately. I urge action on this report right now."
