Alliance: Northern Ireland's cross community party

Hospital security review long overdue - Alliance

12.00.00am GMT Mon 14th Nov 2005

Alliance Castlereagh Councillor Michael Long said today that attacks in Northern Ireland's hospitals this weekend show that a review of how we keep nurses and other health professionals safe is long overdue.

Cllr Long, himself a health professional, stated: "I am disgusted by attacks on staff and property at the Ulster Hospital and elsewhere in Northern Ireland this weekend. I wish those affected a quick recovery. It is utterly intolerable that those doing their best to help people in need are targeted in this way.

"There is no doubt that tougher penalties are required for those carrying out such appalling acts. There is simply no excuse whatsoever for it.

"In that context, I and my party welcome the forthcoming security review. Those who work in our health service have an absolute right to know that they can do so without fear. We must ensure that right is protected."
