Hawkins calls for Children's Parliament

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 10th Aug 2005

Alliance spokesperson for children Marjorie Hawkins has welcomed Lord Rooker's appointment as Children's Minister, and called for it to lead to the establishment of a Children's Parliament.

The North Belfast representative stated: "We in Alliance were pushing for a Children's Minister well before the establishment of the Children's Commission, because we want the needs of future generations placed at the heart of government.

"We would now call on Lord Rooker to move towards the natural next step, a children's parliament, as the best means of giving children a direct voice.

"It is important this step forward has a tangible outcome for children."
