Alliance welcome changes at city hall

12.00.00am GMT Tue 2nd Mar 1999

Alliance Councillor Tom Campbell has welcomed the decision of Belfast City Council's acceptance of the Alliance Party's proposal to introduce a system of proportionality with regard to senior Committee posts at Belfast City Hall.

Councillor Campbell said:

"We pioneered this scheme as we felt it important to ensure fairness and equality in the manner in which senior posts are allocated at Committee level. It is to be welcomed that we have moved on from decades of one party rule. The D'hondt formula was not our preference as the means of ensuring proportionality and we supported another mechanism for this, but we welcome the fact that the other parties have agreed that a proportional system is the best way to ensure fair local government for all."
