Neeson Calls for Goverments Intervention over Harland & Wolff

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 21st Sep 2000

"Alliance Party Leader Sean Neeson has described today's job losses at Harland & Wolff as a hammer blow for the workforce and a hammer blow for shipbuilding in the United Kingdom."

Mr Neeson says:

"It is imperative that the remaining workforce is kept on on a long term basis in order to retain the necessary skills at the ship yard. I firmly believe that the UK government should have done more to protect shipbuilding, particularly in Belfast, and that every effort must now be made to ensure that the current potential orders are secured."

"I also believe that the US government should examine the operations of Global Marine who have contributed so much to the present difficulties the shipyard is now facing".
