12.00.00am GMT Tue 28th Jan 2003

ALLIANCE Castlereagh Councillor Michael Long has welcomed proposals by Minister of State Angela Smith today to increase the number of fixed and mobile speed cameras on our roads.

Locally, Cllr Long welcomed an increase in the number of speed traps at Lower Braniel Road and Church Road following requests from him.

He said: "Given the terrible number of road deaths recently, I am pleased the Government is taking firm action to tackle the problem of speeding."

"I am also pleased to learn that the PSNI has increased the number of speed traps at local areas notorious for speeding problems at Lower Braniel Road, chucrh Road."

"Having receved many complaints about these problems, I am pleased to see that the Police have responded inttroduced more traps."

"I will continue to lobby Roads Service to provide speed cameras at both these locations, as that would further reduce the problem of speeding 24 hours a day."
