UDA cynical gesture is 'damp squib'

12.00.00am GMT Thu 20th Feb 2003

Alliance's prospective candidate for North Belfast has said the UDA's dumping of pipe bombs and fireworks at Ewart's playing fields was a cynical gesture."

"This token gesture of leaving a few pipe bombs to be destroyed has no more merit than the LVF's equally pathetic move a few years ago. I doubt anyone believes that this set piece by the UDA indicates a change of heart on the part of loyalist paramilitaries, and the sickening attack on St Colman's would seem to back this."

"To leave 14 pipe bombs and four fireworks lying in playing fields isn't decommissioning - it's nothing more than a damp squib."
