Dunlop condemns Dalmatian drowning

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 26th May 2005

Jayne Dunlop, Alliance Party Spokesperson for North Antrim, has condemned the drowning of a Dalmatian dog at the ECOS Millennium Environmental Centre.

Jayne Dunlop said, "I was sickened to hear the news that a dog had been mercilessly thrown into the river at ECOS, with the intent of drowning it. The dog must have suffered as it struggled in vain to escape. This was a callous and cruel act.

"If the dog was unwanted it could have been taken to the dog warden or the nearby Dogs' Trust shelter for re-homing. If this was a case of pure cruelty then it is nothing short of depraved.

"Recent reports of cruelty towards dogs in Northern Ireland give cause for concern and must be tackled by the relevant authorities."
