Time for a proper debate on schools: Parsley

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 19th May 2005

Young Alliance Chairman Ian James Parsley has called for a proper public debate on the schools transfer system.

Cllr Parsley stated: "Our tribal political system has led to a simplistic debate on the schools transfer system, when in fact this is a very complex issue.

"It is not simply a case of keeping the 11+ or abolishing selection altogether. Already different areas in Northern Ireland have different selection procedures. These procedures suit some pupils, and do not suit others.

"It is fairly well established that the current procedure must undergo reform. But are people seriously suggesting that an English-style postcode lottery system is really any better?

"The task is to promote what is good about the current system, and reform what is not. This requires a mature public debate, not a slanging match along sectarian lines. Our children's education is far too important for that."
