Neeson welcomes North South interconnector news

12.00.00am GMT Mon 22nd Nov 2004

FORMER Vice Chairman of the Assembly Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committee Sean Neeson MLA has welcomed proposals for a new cross-border electricity interconnector.

Speaking today, Mr Neeson stated:

"This is very welcome news for electricity consumers. Developing the market for electricity on an island wide basis makes good economic sense and will ease the burden on customers throughout this island.

"It will also be beneficial both north and south of the border when there are shortages of supply in one area could be supplied to the other region.

"These plans are very much in line with the Assembly report published by the Assembly's Enterprise, Trade and Investment Committee in 2002. Creating an all-island market is a long-term project, but the end benefits will make it worth it."
