Duncan welcomes completion of footpath as safer route for pupils

Having lobbied Roads Service for a footpath at Manse Road for some time, Councillor Sara Duncan was finally able to thank Roads Service employees for completing the footpath from Garland Hill to Lagan College.

Cllr Duncan said: "Every time Roads Service came to Castlereagh Council I questioned them as to when a pavement would be constructed. This is a narrow country road, made very busy by motorists using it to avoid traffic on the Knock carriageway during the rush hour. School children were in danger because of the numerous bends, the stone wall to one side, and the speed and volume of traffic.

"I was invited to a meeting with the headmistress of Lagan College and Roads Service at which it was at last agreed that road improvements and a footpath would go ahead.

"The realigning of Manse Road, rebuilding of the bridge at the junction with the Glencregagh Road, and creation of a footpath were much-needed improvements for the safety of drivers and pedestrians.

"Lagan College celebrated its 20th Anniversary two years ago, so after many years of campaigning, we have finally secured a safer route to school for pupils. People will also be able to walk to Cregagh Glen, and Lisnabreeny Fort, part of the Ulster Way, without having to brave the oncoming cars on Manse Road."
