University must consult on pool's future: Frazer

ALLIANCE Councillor Lynn Frazer (Newtownabbey) has said the University of Ulster should not have dived into a decision to close its Jordanstown campus swimming pool without proper consultation.

Cllr Frazer was speaking after she met with Students' Union representatives today at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown (UUJ) who are protesting at the pool's planned closure.

Cllr Frazer said: "While I am pleased that the university has secured funding for better sports facilities, it seems incredible that it should now seek to close down its swimming pool - an integral part of any leading sports centre.

"Because this decision must have been taken some time ago, there is much suspicion about the timing of UUJ's announcement. It was underhand of the university to announce its decision during the holidays, when students are away and there are fewer staff on campus.

"Students will be returning to a closed pool if the university goes ahead with its plans. But it is not as concerning at the total lack of consultation with students, staff or public representatives.

"I am calling for a stay of execution for the pool and for UUJ to engage in a meaningful consultation exercise now to see if a way can be found to save this popular facility."
