Phoenix customers have been let down: Bell

12.00.00am GMT Fri 19th Mar 2004

ALLIANCE Deputy Leader Eileen Bell MLA has said that massive increases in the price of Phoenix Natural Gas to Northern Ireland customers will lead to greater fuel poverty and reduced confidence in the industry.

Mrs Bell, a north Down Phoenix customer herself, said: "This 20 percent increase will see gas bills increase dramatically for that second time in a few months. That is going to have a severe effect on some families and smaller businesses, who will face the brunt of the price hike, and lead to greater fuel poverty.

"While we are all subject to global trends in fuel costs, questions still have to be raised about the deal being struck between the supplier and Phoenix. Customers have been let down because of the lack of price stability, and there is clearly a need for more transparency.

"I would urge the Regulator to play a part in restoring confidence to this market, as gas customers feel let down again."
