Rice calls for end to racist intimidation

12.00.00am GMT Wed 10th Mar 2004

ALLIANCE South Belfast representative Geraldine Rice has condemned racist leaflets being distributed in the area and racist graffiti.

Councillor Rice said: "This is simply trying to create a climate of fear and is just another form of intimidation designed to make minority ethnic communities feel unwelcome in Belfast.

"The narrow-minded racists behind these leaflets and graffiti might be trying to stir up tension, but the overwhelming majority of people in South Belfast are proud that it is the most multi-cultural part of Northern Ireland, and we want it to stay that way.

"The community must make it clear that this type of intimidation is unacceptable. It is tarnishing our reputation as a welcoming city and I would call on those behind it to stop now."
