Neeson shocked at potential Nortel job losses

12.00.00am GMT Thu 22nd Jan 2004

ALLIANCE Assembly member Sean Neeson has expressed his shock at the speculation that 300 jobs could be lost at Nortel's plant in Monkstown.

Mr Neeson said: "This news is devastating, bearing in mind the decision by Solectron to close its plant at Carrickfergus, despite the fact that there has been an upturn globally in the IT market.

"Nortel had significant signs of recovery after the downfall in sales three years ago, and already I have asked for an urgent meeting with Industry Minister Ian Pearson about recent job losses in the East Antrim area.

"I am now hoping for meaningful discussions with him and senior officials of Invest NI."
