Close: 'Motorists pockets are exhausted by charges'

12.00.00am GMT Tue 20th Jan 2004

ALLIANCE Assembly member Seamus Close has hit out at the Department of Regional Development's decision to increase car parking charges in Northern Ireland.

Mr Close, Alliance's Finance Spokesman, said: "No amount of empty rhetoric can justify increases of over 30 percent in car parking.

"When you add to this huge increases in insurance, car tax, fuel, maintenance and the victimisation of the motorist by speed cameras, the question must be posed: what sort of country treats such generous contributors to the Treasury like mugs?

"The motorists' pockets are exhausted."
