Time to reduce tax on petrol for NI: Close

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 14th Oct 2003

ALLIANCE Finance Spokesman Seamus Close has said that if the Government is going to bring us into line with the rest of the UK on water charge, rates and industrial rating, it should do the same for petrol prices.

Mr Close said: "The Government is putting our regional rate up by 9 percent to bring us into line with Great Britain. It tells us we must pay water rates to bring us in line with GB, and that industrial de-rating must be abolished to bring us in line with GB.

"Yet we are paying the highest petrol prices in Europe. When will the Government bring us into line with Great Britain on petrol?

"The least the Government could do is be consistent."
