Tough legislation needs to be backed up with police action

Alliance Party Justice Spokesperson, Stephen Farry, has welcomed the Government's that tougher measures against those who engage in rioting and public disorder are set to come into effect this week, but cautioned that the new approach will only be effective if the police are prepared t make arrests.

Dr Farry stated:

"Northern Ireland continues to suffer from serious public order problems. This is a timely move from the Government, especially as we enter into the summer period.

"There is a dangerous perception right across the community that people can engage in riotous behaviour in this country with impunity. Indeed, it seems that the greater the number of people engaged in criminal activity, then the greater chances of getting away with it.

"This legislation will send an important message both to the potential criminal and of some assurance to the general public. However, it will only be of use after people have been brought to court.

"If we are to tackle our public disorder problems then the police need to be more prepared to make arrests, even using video evidence after the fact if necessary."
