Government plan is 'only option for Giant's Causeway'

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 14th Apr 2003

ALLIANCE Assembly member Sean Neeson has welcomed the direct intervention of the Government in the future development of the Giant's Causeway area.

As Deputy Chairman of the Assembly's committee on Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Mr Neeson had chaired a series of meetings between the National Trust and private developers about the future of the Causeway.

Mr Neeson said: "The Giant's Causeway is too important an asset in world heritage terms to be in the total control of any body less than Government.

"A substantial amount of finance is now required to provide the necessary facilities to reflect its importance as Northern Ireland's premier tourist destination. Only Government in partnership with interested bodies can achieve this."
